Corrugated Floor Deck: What type of floor deck is right for you?
Posted October 19, 2021 by CreativeBuildingSupply
Creative Building Supply fabricates corrugated floor deck made of corrugated sheet metal with custom trims, flashings and profiles. Our custom metal fabrication shop has the latest equipment to handle your custom metal fabrication needs. Whether you are in the architectural, commercial or residential market, we recommend our corrugated floor deck for a variety of applications.
What Is a Corrugated Floor Deck?
Corrugated metal is lightweight, strong and rustproof and this makes it the best choice for a variety of applications. Besides our corrugated floor deck products, we use corrugated metal in a variety of applications from the garden to landscapes to artwork.
First, corrugated sheet metal has ridges and valleys that give it structure and rigidity without adding weight, which would make it harder to work with. The ridges and valleys provide excellent drainage and also form a durable subfloor for concrete pouring across a variety of projects.
Our corrugated metal products are galvanized, meaning they are covered in a coating of zinc to make them weather and rust resistant. Corrugated floor deck, like all corrugated metal products, consists of a thin planar material with flat plateaus in the ridges and valleys, excluding customized trims, of course. Although you can get this equipment at hardware stores, as a wholesaler we have a larger supply in a wider range of thicknesses and other options.
Three Types of Corrugated Floor Deck
There are three types of corrugated floor deck, and they are defined by their thickness. You can choose from 1.5-inch, 2-inch, and 3-inch depths. Between the gauge of the steel and depth of the floor deck you can calculate engineering values including the panel strength. Basically, floor decking with deeper ridges and valleys and a heavier gauge of metal is stronger than products with shallower ridges and valleys and thinner metal. Therefore, 3-inch floor decking is stronger than 2-inch options.
Let’s take a closer look at the 3 types of corrugated floor deck products.
B Composite Corrugated Floor Decking (1.5-inch Deep)
Type B decking stands 1.5-inch high. It’s often shortened to just Type B or B decking. It has the lowest profile of the three types of corrugated floor deck. Its low profile gives it a greater capacity for short spans. Many contractors choose 1.5-inc Type B decking because of its low cost, durability and ease of use.
2-Inch Corrugated Floor Deck
There are numerous names for this level of decking. With 2-inch corrugated decking, builders can pour thicker concrete slabs and increase the span of the poured area. This corrugated floor deck option has 2-inch-deep ribs and provides more space for wire mesh, rebar and other building materials. Typically, you can use 2-inch corrugated metal decking for jobs that require at least two inches of concrete over and above the ribs for a minimum slab thickness of four inches.
3-Inch Corrugated Floor Deck
The 3-inch corrugated floor deck has the deepest ridges of the three types. It also provides the strongest metal floor deck with the widest possible span. It allows you to pour a much thicker concrete slab than either the 1.5-inch or 2-inch options. With a 3-inch corrugated floor deck from Creative Building Supply, it’s important to pour a minimum of 2 inches of concrete above the ribs, resulting in a slab thickness of 5 inches. Although this requirement rules it out for some applications, it’s the strongest corrugated floor deck type of the bunch.
What Are the Benefits of Corrugated Floor Decking?
At Creative Building Supply, we have a rigorous quality control process to ensure reliability and consistency in every sheet we sell. Corrugated floor deck products are versatile building materials that provide rigidity without requiring a bulky profile.
Many builders use it to strengthen and reinforce concrete floors. When you add steel, you get a very strong floor foundation. Not only do we stock and fabricate corrugated floor decking, but we also customize it for large custom projects. This all takes place in our fabrication shop.
